After two years, nine meetings and many drafts the Leonardo da Vinci partnership project has produced a set of pan-European competencies for Teachers of the Deaf. The five partners (Telford and Wrekin Local Authority and Oxford Brookes University with Mary Hare school in the UK, the universities of Malta and Leuven in Belgium and FEAPDA) intended to produce some agreed competencies which could be seen as the minimum needed to support the education of deaf children and young people. These had to embrace both countries with well established Teacher of the Deaf professions and those with no formal training at all. The document has now been produced and can be downloaded here (from this page). Several of the partners wish to pursue this further through another European project known as a Transfer of Innovation - the aim of this project would be to establish different types of training to ensure that steps are taken to ensure that Teachers of the Deaf throughout Europe develop these competencies through a range of training opportunities including face-to-face and online delivery. If you want any further information or have a question please contact FEAPDA.
