Why technology?
During the last decades we have come to a point, where technology has become an inseparable part of every aspect of our life, including education. Due to the rapid improvement and development of technological devices, more and more opportunities are also opening up for the Deaf. The broadened possibilities of using technology enable to combine more successfully visual and verbal information and enhance Deaf learners' information processing and retention. It also provides several alternatives to make learning more fun and enjoyable, encouraging a more active engagement in the learning process and making learning more effective which could often be hard to achieve through a traditional lesson. In addition to this, the situation with the Covid-19 pandemics has shown us that the need for distant learning has become inevitable, which also requires good knowledge and support of technical solutions. Furthermore, having been brought up in a company of a variety of digital devices, it can often happen these days that the students tend to be more skilled and knowledgeable in handling different technological devices than those who provide them education. In connection with this, the students also tend to have higher expectations towards the quality and variety of learning possibilities. All this on the other hand brings along a lot of challenges and a constant need to keep oneselves up to date with the changes in order to be able to make better choices and manage in the most effective way. The latter also applies to the schools and teachers.
In order to be able to meet the student's and the changing society's expectations and provide a more contemporary, inclusive, efficient and interesting learning environment and support to students as well as the learning process in general, the educators must keep themselves up to date on what kind of possibilities are there available at all, how to make the most out of them in practice and be open to improve their knowledge and skills in the field - our congress will help to make a step towards this.
The main focus of the congress is on sharing research findings, experiences and good practices of innovative use of technology in Deaf education as well as in communication and management outside the classroom limits – this in a large scale involves the use of technical solutions in three main categories: teaching and learning activities; services to increase the access to information, learning and participating in the society; improving the quality of communication.

Location and further information
The congress will be held in the historic city of Tallinn (https://www.visittallinn.ee/) situated on the shore of the Baltic Sea. Tallinn is the capital city and the main financial, industrial and cultural center of Estonia. It is located 80 kilometers south of Helsinki, Finland, 320 kilometers west of Saint Petersburg, Russia, 300 kilometers north of Riga, Latvia, and 380 kilometers east of Stockholm, Sweden.
Estonia is a cozy small country (45,227 km²) where everything is nearby: Tallinn Airport (https://www.tallinn-airport.ee/en/) is located only 5.0 km from the city center and is easily reached by public transportation. We hope that all flight connections that have been cancelled or limited due to the pandemics will be restored by 2022 and travelling is possible without any obstacles.
The event will take place at Nordic Hotel Forum (https://www.nordichotels.eu/en/) which is a modern four-star business and conference hotel in the very heart of Tallinn, just 150 m from the historical medieval Old Town – a UNESCO World Heritage site (https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/822/) . Tallinn’s main sightseeing, shopping, dining and entertainment venues are all within a walking distance.
The host of the congress is the Estonian Association of Teachers of Deaf and Hearing Impaired Children (Kuulmispuudega Laste Õpetajate Selts, KLÕPS, http://klops.edu.ee/), which has been a member of FEAPDA since 2018.
More information about the congress and practicalities will be available soon – stay tuned and see you in Tallinn!
